Details of the Programme are as complete as far as possible at the date of issue. Updates will appear as necessary, and will be posted on our Web site.

Attendance is open to all, irrespective of membership status, however it is advised that you let the Field Trip Director or myself know that you wish to attend, at least 7 days in advance, so that you can be told of any venue change or cancellation. If nobody registers an interest, it is probable that the meeting will be cancelled.

The Tertiary Research Group cannot accept liability for any loss or accident incurred whilst on out field meetings. Everyone who attends does so at his or her own risk. Always wear suitable footwear and clothing. For quarry visits, please bring your own hardhat and high visibility vest.

The Tertiary Research Group is always interested in hearing about new (or old) localities to visit, temporary exposures, or providing assistance with research activities that can be included in the programme. Please contact Steve Tracey with details

Sunday July 9

Cudmore Grove, East Mersea, Essex.

Leader: Bob Markham .

Joint trip with the Essex Rock & Mineral Society & the Suffolk Natural History Soceity.

A Pleistocene interglacial deposit containing a rich fossil fauna is exposed in the cliff and foreshore. London clay is also present.
Meet 2.30pm at Country Park car park (TM066 146).

Friday 14^th - Sunday 16^th July

Paris Basin.

Leader: Steve Tracey

A chance to visit some exotic Thanetian, Ypresian, Lutetian & Bartonian sites and perhaps a picnic on Mount Aimee.
Places are limited. Contact Steve Tracey or David Ward in writing to reserve a place.
Members will be responsible for their own transport arrangements.

Saturday August 19th

Coralline Crag at Broom Pit, Orford, Suffolk.

Leader: Alan Lane

· A classic shelly Coralline Crag pit.

· Bring sieves digging tools packed lunch and drinking water - it gets hot there.

· Meet at Woodbridge Station at 11am.

Bracklesham Bay

Joint trip with the Wessex Open University Geological Society.

Saturday 7th October

Wrabness & Harwich, Essex.

Leaders: Graham Ward & Bill George

Joint meeting with the Open University Geological Society, London Branch.

Graham and Bill have become experts in their local geology. They will take us to examine a sequence of Palaeogene ash bands and Pleistocene River deposits at Wrabness. The 16m high cliff, with 34 ash bands will be examined and discussed and a shelly Pleistocene Brickearth (Stage 7) 210,000 years old will be visited if time and tide allow. We will then go on to Harwich beach to view the Harwich Stone Band and to collect Lower Tertiary vertebrate fossils mainly sharks’ teeth, from the beach and foreshore. High tide is at 12.30pm so we will be on the beaches on a falling tide but first we will visit Wrabness church to examine the grave of an alchemist and fossil collector and take a look at the building stones.

Meet 12.45 for a prompt getaway at 1pm, Wrabness Railway Station [TM 180 315]. We will then drive to Wrabness Church followed by Wrabness beach 4.30pm approx. Low Lighthouse Harwich [TM 263 324].
Finish 5.30pm approx. Harwich Low Lighthouse.

Sunday 8th October

Abbey Wood, SE London.

This trip continues to be the most popular of recent years, with individuals and extended families taking the opportunity to dig and sieve the shell bed which make this the most fossiliferous site accessible in the London area. Children are welcome, but must be kept away from the edges of the excavation.
Attendance requires all participants to retain and search all material over 0.5mm and to bring all reptile, bird and mammal remains to the Director’s attention. Please bring a digging implement, a large bucket or bowl, lots of bags and your own set of graded sieves. Water for wet sieving will be available.
Meet at 12.00am on the north side of Lessness Abbey Woods, east of the ruined Abbey itself. It is a short walk up this path to the excavation within the woods. Abbey Wood station is within walking distance. Drivers please park on Abbey Road (the B213), not in the woods.
As previously, we must hire a mechanical digger. This is a costly undertaking, so it is hoped that all active participants will make an appropriate donation, in the order of £15. Without this voluntary donation we would not be able to afford this excavation.
